Oscar-Claude Monet (Paris, November 14, 1840-Giverny, December 5, 1926) was a French painter, one of the founders of Impressionism. The term Impressionism is derived from the title of his work Impression, Sunrise (1872) .1

His early works, up to half of the 1860s, are of realistic style. Monet managed to expose some at the Paris Motor Show. From the end of the 1860s he began painting Impressionist works. This deviation from the taste of the time, which was marked by the art academies, worsened their economic situation as well as strengthened its resolve to continue in this haphazard way.

In the 1870s he was part of the Impressionist exhibitions in which also participated Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Edgar Degas. His work Impression, Sunrise was part of the Salon des Refusés in 1874. His career was driven by the art dealer Paul Durand-Ruel, but despite this being his financial situation remained difficult until mid 1890. At that time, Monet developed the concept of 'series', in which a subject is painted repeatedly with different lighting. At the same time he began working on the famous garden of his house in Giverny with lily ponds which he then used as a reason for his paintings.
